"The guys offer you another taste of their usual mix of soft rock, country rock, and true rock in an album with eye pictures as effective artwork.
One flashing light – opens into a melodic clash and tinkle before Brendan kicks in with the vox, gains bounce in the chorus, lingers in the mind as a typical semi-rock SOD treasure.
Sexual pretender – the shortest track gives you rocking beats and Brendan’s clear voice offering up another mind-catching gem that I first heard as a free download some time back. You’ll soon be singing along to this one.
Love parade – this one is one of my two personal favs from the new album. Gentler start with whisper-effect backing. Interesting lyrics to ponder and singalong with.
Everything to everyone – this track almost made it to a fav, starting as a pleasing little tune topped with Brendan’s softer vocal side and leading into a tuneful chorus. You can just imagine Richard bopping away on his drums in the background and Matt swinging away on guitar.
Sidewalk sun – rocky guitar beats intro this song that leads into a boppy country-rock track held on track by Richard’s regular thud-beats til it fades away.
Hollow man – a bouncy intro brings out another facet of Brendan’s vox. You can’t help but bop along to the longest track on the album.
Fear – a kaleidoscopic start, country styled, a long fade out, yet another tuneful display from the guys.
Business side – twisty guitar intro, lots more sway than rock if Richard didn’t thump us out a beat to head-bop to, brings out Brendan’s multiple vocal talent well.
Waiting for a train – my other personal fav opens with some ace drumming from Richard and Brendan’s voice then covers a country-style track well backed by the guys.
Life is amazing – a gentler song ends the album, slower but just as ear-demanding. Drift along on the music and forget it is the last track til it ends calmly on a distant fade out…
…and then you realize it’s time to play the album again!"

Camp O'Neill's got a new custom MacDougall guitar! Take a peek...
It was like a scene out of the movie Dazed and Confused. Local artisan Thomas MacDougall rolls up to the barn with a car loaded with custom made amps and guitars. Not necessarily your typical Sunday. However, one of these guitars was made especially for Camp O'Neill. It was the grand unveiling for a guitar Camp had been dreaming about for quite a while. And it couldn't have come at a better time. Some of you may remember that all of Camp's equipment was stolen months back. Since then there has an outpouring of support in the form of loaned amps and guitars, a custom made Willing guitar and now this. Take a peak at the photo below and a little video made on the scene.
Many thanks go out to Thomas and the MacDougall family for taking the time to come up to our neck of the woods and hang with us.

Shades of Day on Jango Airplay
The band is now on Jango. Jango is an online radio station that plays music based on the bands you like (think Pandora meets Facebook). I started my own Shades of Day radio station and got: Wilco "I'm The Man Who Loves You", Toad The Wet Sprocket "Stories I Tell", U2 "With Or Without You", Better Than Ezra "At The Stars", Collective Soul "The World I Know", Counting Crowes "Perfect Blue Bindings", Third Eye Blind "Graduate", Keith Urban...
What songs will you discover? Check it out here. Oh, and be sure to become a fan of Shades of Day while you are there ;-)

The Santa Barbara Independent's Review of TAKE ALL NIGHT is now online!
Read the article from the Independent's Website here
"Years ago, the West Beach Festival hosted Shades of Day, an Ojai-based band whose infectious mix of rock, pop, and deep grooves nearly stole the show from their main-stage counterparts. Most recently, though, the band released its sophomore album, Take All Night, a 10-song CD that delivers a healthy sampling of the band’s musical interests. The root of the record is classic rock, but the guys keep things interesting by bending the genre to include strains of pop and dancehall. “One Flashing Light” and “Waiting on a Train” are bright, radio-ready songs, while “Sidewalk Sun” gives a nod to The Black Crowes-style hard rock. Other standouts include the catchy “Hollow Man” and “Life Is Amazing,” which highlights frontman B. Willing James’s rich tenor. It’s a solid attempt by a group that definitely deserves to be seen live, and one we think proudly represents the staying power of good old rock ’n’ roll."

B Willing, Bruce and Roger talking up Rey Fresco's Freak Fest
Last week in Ventura after the obligatory Corrales run, I met up with Roger and Bruce at the Ventura Theater to game plan for the show next Friday the 29th. Thank the good Lord for Steve Jobs. Dude makes it easy for musicians to direct, shoot and edit movies. Yep. Took me an entire day to edit and post to youtube, where it promptly got squished and shifted off axis. Awesome. Switching to Vimeo. I may look back when I'm old on the day my filmmaking career both began and ended. Off topic. The point is...
We had a good hang, plotting some real action for the show. Costumes, jams, shenanigans.. I read somewhere there's gonna be a laser show at this thing. Get right out of town.
It's been a few years since I really got pumped up for Halloween. I'm gonna really live up the dead thing this year. We're cooking up a rowdy show, and will be rolling out new Shades merch...

I'm pissed at Fark today...how dare they claim the drums as a
Today on Fark music was this little blurb: "The Drums claim to have written their "best song ever." Aw, it's cute when a band you've never heard of that named themselves after a useless musical device makes bold statements [Fail]"
Yeah well, Fark FAILS for making such an idiotic statement.

Easy Rider and Shades of Day have somethings in common...
I just saw Easy Rider for the first time last night and man...what a movie. The soundtrack alone was awesome. Two of the songs are regular covers we like to play when we have one of those long bar gigs. "The Weight" and "Don't Bogart Me" (although we play the Little Feat version "Don't Bogart That Joint").
Now, where I can score one of those Captain America jackets?!
